The house was starting to fall apart Render noticed. The ceiling had caved in some spots and the foundation was cracked and crumbling. It was rickety he knew but this had been his refuge since as long as he could remember. He slowly carried his day's meal into the house, dodging the floor boards he knew could give.
The squirrel he carried had been dead for a couple of days and was a small meal for a dog his size, but hunting wasn't his style. He couldn't sneak or pounce without making loads of noise. His stomach growled as he lay on a shabby stained carpet with his food. Ahh, food, finally he thought to himself.
He gnawed slowly, enjoying each bite when his ears perked and he heard the floor boards creak unfamiliarly. He jumped and tried to make himself as small as possible in the corner, behind a mildewy couch.
INTRUDER!

Fly stepped daintily away from the creaky board, cursing under her breath and narrowing her eyes. She had been following the smell of food; it was so rare in this world now, she was prepared to follow her nose to the ends of the earth, it would seem. Her mouth was watering at the thought of ripping flesh from bones, having something to fill even a small space in her yawning stomach. She had learned two things about life lately: drink when you saw water, regardless of if you were thirsty or not, and eat even if you're not hungry, because you don't know how long of a lapse will be between you and your next meal.
But here I went and dashed it all, she thought bitterly. Then her thoughts were interrupted by the scrabbling of nails and the sudden wave of dogscent. She wasn't alone in this ramshackle hellhole. Her eyes narrowed and she flexed her shoulders, taking a stiff-legged step forward, hackles abristle. She silenced a preemptory growl; she didn't feel it was necessary. If she was in danger of a fight, the dog would have jumped her already. With flattened, suspicious ears and a grim face, she peered around the corner. Her eyes still had to adjust to the light.
"Who's there? Show yourself."

At the sound of a voice Render stiffened and suppressed a whine. He shivered. Oh hell, please, just go. When he didn't hear anymore movement he peaked around the corner, only to see the other dog peaking into the room, ears flat. Oh no Then he remembered his meal, the dead squirrel stunk to high heaven, he could barely smell the intruder. He took what was left and tossed it out into the center of the room.
"Take it, I don't want any trouble." He called shakily, attempting to push himself further into the corner. He covered his head with his paws.

Fly eyed the thing he’d offered her, tilting her head one way and then the other. She bent her delicately lined head to sniff it warily; she knew when to take precautions. This had been far too easy to attain. She straightened up and stared at the large silver male who crouched opposite of her. Too easy…where’s the fun in this? Normally she would have snatched the squirrel up and run but instead, using a thin sinuous paw, she flicked the squirrel back to its former owner and regarded him coolly, unsure of where this snippet of kindness was coming from. It’s not like she knew him, or pitied him.
”Hey you, I suggest you act like you haven’t been recently neutered and claim your prey. I’m no thief when I can help it.” She meant to put as much kindness, even generosity, in her voice as possible but it still came out kind of gruff, a tribute to the lack of generosity and kindness she showed on a daily basis.

Render began to shake harder, a whine escaping his lips. He sighed, Pull yourself together man. The meat hit his paws, he heard the other dog say something about being recently neutered. He snorted at the thought.
Shakily, he rose to his full height, trying to seem non-threatening. He stepped out from behind the couch, walking steadily toward what he now noticed was a greyhound. He bent his head low and walked toward her. He stepped slowly, his huge paws causing the floor to creak heavily. When he was directly in front of her, one of the floor boards gave way and his back paw fell through the old boards. He yipped, tossing the squirrel inadvertently into the other dog's face.
He looked at her with huge dark eyes. Oh no, please don't hurt me
